Smith Rock

Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

Distance:  Varies

This is one of my all-time favorites.  You can take a flat and easy trail that meanders next to the Crooked River at the base of the rock,  offering picturesque landscapes and wildlife along the way.  Or take a stab at the more challenging  Misery Ridge Trail.  It will take you up to an elevation of almost 3000 feet and stunning views of Monkey Face and the surrounding canyons.

The ever impressive Monkey Face. Climb at your own risk!

Paulina Peak via Crater Rim Trail

Difficulty: Moderate

Distance6.2 miles

Located in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument near Bend, there are limitless areas to hike and explore in this rugged, unique, view-filled high lakes area.  Paulina Peak is the top of the Newberry Caldera.   East Lake Campground is the perfect place to set up your home base.  The hike starts at Paulina Lake.  You'll pass varied terrain that includes mountain hemlock, lodgepole pine, and white fir woodland.  At the summit you'll find amazing view of the Cascade Mountain Range.

Big Obsidian Flow from Paulina Peak, Newberry Caldera.  East Lake and Paulina lake in the distance.

Green Lakes Trail

Difficulty: Strenuous

Distance: 9.2 miles round trip

Start early as this one is going to take you a while.  Your can start the hike at the Green Lakes/Soda Creek trailhead, off of the Cascade Lakes Highway.  The hike goes along Fall Creek for the first 2 miles and then passes Moraine Lake on the left.  After Moraine lake, you'll pass by a massive lava flow on the left side.  Overnight back packers will be found at the campsites once you reach the lake.

View of South Sister.
